Lake Como- day two

Our first night in a Varenna did find us tossing and turning due to the lack of any kind of breeze and the heat. Our room did not have air conditioning so we resorted to running the bathroom fan all night just to pull a little air through the room.
 Somebody must have been on the take to get this place rated 8.2 out of 10 on Booking.com.
Breakfast was individually packaged sweet buns and Melba toast with crappy coffee. I’ve had better food from a vending machine.
 After a quick walk along the lakefront we took the ferry over to the town of Bellagio, some 15 minutes distant.
 While we were buying our tickets an American tourist was “losing his shit” demanding compensation for yesterday’s situation with the air show. Apparently he was tired of waiting in line for the ferry from Menaggio back to Varenna so he hired a private boat. He was making all kinds of threats about posting negative reviews in all the US travel magazines and getting louder and louder as people around began to gather. The ticket agent, without losing her cool just looked at him and said in Italian “ Sir, it’s really not my problem. The ferry was about to board so I never got to witness the conclusion.
  Bellagio turned out to be one of the most picturesque towns I have ever seen. Like Varenna it had steep steps leading to the upper levels but we took the longer but much more walkable road instead. It was clear that most of the retail establishments were catering to the wealthy. 250 Euro shoes, 300 Euro man purses and 100 Euro designer belts werejust some examples. A bottle of Scotch was going for 40 Euro and truffle based products started at 22.E and up. Vacuum packed rice for risotto was selling for 12E and I bitch about paying $3.50 for it back home.
 We spent an hour walking around before we stopped for a quick lunch beside the main church.
 Continuing on we discovered a couple of beautiful parks shaded by tall trees. 
 The waterfront was busy with people strolling along walkways lined with flowers.
  We didn’t get to see George Clooney- maybe next time.

In retrospect we possibly could have shortened our trip to Milan by one day, but there is a large shopping area that we have barely touched so we will probably do that tomorrow.  We started our visit with the most obvious spot, the Cathedral. Located in a large Piazza it must’ve one of the largest in Italy, if not Europe. We restricted our visit to the main body of the building and the archeology site in the basement ,the actual museum being closed on the day of our visit. They did offer an elevator ride or stair climb to the rooftop. However wehave seen more than enough panoramic views of many European cities. Hotter at home!

When we left Puerto Plata the noon temperature was 26. When we arrived in Toronto at 6pm it was 28.          But I’m getting a little ahead of myself.  The “ city tour” was about all I expected it to be. Our first stop was at a rum factory for a “tasting” at 9:30am. The brand wasn’t one I was familiar with : Ron Macorix. Mostly white rum mixed with various fruits or coconut, I took a pass once I sampled their premium brand- I would imagine if you drank the pee of a mule with diabetes…..! From there we travelled through town to visit San Felipe Fort, more like a bastion than an actual fortress it sits at the mouth of the San Marco river thus protecting both the river access and the adjacent seafront. I managed to smack my head twice on extremely low doorways - the folks that built it must have topped out at 5 ft.
